It retains nearly all of its original milling machinery, including twin turbines, roller mills and a middlings purifier. It illustrates the shift from buhrstone grinding to roller milling and from water wheels to turbines, and shows how a country mill served local farmers.","narrative":"Malvern Roller Mill is a country water-powered mill on the south bank of Rock Creek, about nine miles northeast of Morrison in Whiteside County, Illinois. Built around 1858, it is a two-and-a-half-story wood-frame building on a stone foundation, with a scale addition added about 1895 and an engine room added in 1920. Inside, nearly all the original equipment remains, including twin turbines in the basement, a Barnard and Leas roller mill, a middlings purifier, feed grinders, wagon scales and wooden lifting gear. A diesel engine supplemented water power from 1920. The mill ground flour, cornmeal and animal feed for local farmers, and its owner also quarried and ground limestone for use on fields. It closed in 1942. The property is recognized for its role in commerce and industry between 1858 and 1942, and for showing the change from millstones and water wheels to roller milling and turbines.","period_of_significance":"1858-1942","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Water Mill","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Listed as not in use; the mill closed in 1942, but nearly all equipment remains and could be returned to operating condition with some effort.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.655017-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/95/8942/28894295/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/95000988.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000988/0cf020ef96-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000988/0cf020ef96-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"IvoShandor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morrison_Il_Malvern_Mill2.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">IvoShandor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morrison_Il_Malvern_Mill2.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28894295","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malvern_Roller_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6745087"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/whiteside-county/malvern-roller-mill-95000988/"}
