Its hall/parlor plan is unaltered, and its later additions show how the house evolved. It has also remained in the same family continuously.","narrative":"Poplar Hill is a 125-acre farm northeast of Smithfield in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Its main building is a story-and-a-half frame house with a hall/parlor plan, built in the late eighteenth century by John Stott, a Scottish immigrant who bought land near the headwaters of the Pagan River. A date brick in the west chimney reads either 1793 or 1795. Later additions include a rear leanto from the early nineteenth century, a kitchen wing added after the Civil War, and a 1920s sun room that is now a bedroom. Outbuildings include a mid-nineteenth-century wash house, a shed, a garage and a stable, with archaeological remains of an icehouse and carriage house. The property was listed for architecture because it typifies the modest vernacular houses of small planters in southeastern Virginia, with simple wainscoting, mantels and batten doors. The house has stayed in the Stott family line since it was built.","period_of_significance":"1793/1795 to 1930s","architect_builder":"John Stott (builder/original owner)","architectural_style":"Early Republic","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Well maintained by the current owners; the property remains in use as a single dwelling with secondary structures.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.599317-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/28/6813/41681328/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/95000975.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000975/21bc950adf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000975/21bc950adf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poplar_Hill,_Isle_of_Wight_County.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Poplar_Hill,_Isle_of_Wight_County.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681328","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poplar_Hill_(Smithfield,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713085"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/isle-of-wight-county/poplar-hill-95000975/"}
