The main block dates to about 1834, with a vestibule addition added about 1855.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the building is a highly intact example of a modest one-room rural schoolhouse of the mid-nineteenth century in New York. It keeps its original form and finishes while showing later alterations that came from a national movement to improve rural schools. It is also a rare local reminder of the hamlet of Jefferson.","narrative":"District School Number 11 is a small one-room schoolhouse on the east side of South Jefferson Avenue in Jefferson, a hamlet in the town of Catskill that grew along the Susquehanna Turnpike. The wood frame main block, built about 1834, sits on a stone foundation under a standing seam metal gable roof and is clad in clapboards. A vestibule and cloakroom added about 1855 dominates the front and carries a square belfry. Inside, the classroom keeps vertical board wainscoting, a chair rail, plaster walls and a coved ceiling. The building replaced a schoolhouse of 1813 and served the district until 1948, when Jefferson students were assigned to the Catskill Central School District. It is considered important as a well-preserved example of a once common rural building type. The pre-reform classroom and the later vestibule together show how mid-nineteenth century education reforms changed school design. It is also one of the few reminders of the community of Jefferson.","period_of_significance":"ca.1833 - ca.1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-Nineteenth Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Closed as a school in 1948; the form lists its current function as a museum and describes the building as virtually intact.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.640258-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95000964.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000964/ec41c78f7d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000964/ec41c78f7d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:District_school_no_11.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:District_school_no_11.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317944","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/District_School_No._11","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5283368"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/district-school-no-11-95000964/"}
