Holdridge for the West Catskill fire company.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an important local example of turn-of-the-century firehouse design, with eclectic styling, terra-cotta and native stone ornament, and a functional plan typical of the period. It was the only fire station built in the West Catskill part of the village. It retains a high degree of integrity and shows changes made to house motorized fire trucks.","narrative":"Built in 1900 at 30 West Bridge Street in Catskill, this three-story brick firehouse served the west side of Catskill Creek, an area once known as West Catskill. Local builder and mason George W. Holdridge constructed it with locally made brick, stone and terra-cotta details, a slate-shingled gable, and a pressed metal cornice. The front facade is three bays wide, with a projecting central bay that holds the truck entrance and a decorative terra-cotta date panel above. In the 1930s the original stone arch was removed and flanking porticos were added so larger motorized equipment could enter. Inside, an open apparatus floor sits below a second floor with original lockers and woodwork. The building replaced an 1864 engine house on the same site and was the only fire station built in West Catskill. It reflects national firehouse design trends of its day. The fire company moved to a new station nearby in 1971, and the building now holds professional offices.","period_of_significance":"1900 - ca. 1930","architect_builder":"George W.
