It is also called an excellent local example of Romanesque Revival industrial architecture, with elaborate corbelled brickwork, a four-story tower and a five-story chimney. It retains an outstanding level of architectural integrity.","narrative":"Built in 1881 on the west bank of Catskill Creek, this brick knitting mill at 130 West Main Street is a rare survivor of the industrial corridor that once lined the creek, which held mills, brick yards, tanneries, docks and warehouses. The Hop-o-nose Knitting Company was founded that year with $25,000 in capital and was headed by local businessman Thomas Ferrier. The factory ran on a 65 horsepower steam engine, employed over 120 workers and could produce more than 100 shirts and drawers a day. It operated until 1958. The two-and-one-half story building shows Romanesque Revival character in its monochromatic brick, segmental arched windows and corbelled cornice. A four-story tower holds the elevator and main stairs, and a five-story tapered chimney rises beside the power house. Heavy timber floors and thick masonry walls carry the interior. Later uses include light manufacturing, storage and theatrical set production. The mill remains one of Catskill's most prominent local landmarks.","period_of_significance":"1881","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Romanesque Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Knitting production ceased in 1958; the building has since housed light manufacturing, storage and theatrical set production.
