It retains much of its original interior layout and finishes. It also reflects the wealth of successful professionals and businessmen in a small Hudson River community in the mid-nineteenth century.","narrative":"Built around 1855 at 241 West Main Street in the West Catskill section of Catskill, New York, this two-story brick house combines Greek Revival and Italianate features. Its rectangular form, symmetrical front, recessed entrance with sidelights and six-over-six windows reflect the earlier style, while the projecting entrance bay, round gable windows and bracketed eaves under a low gable roof come from the Italianate. Inside, a center hall divides two large rooms on each floor, and original fireplaces, mantels, paneled doors and moldings survive. The earliest record of the house is an 1859 deed in which Joseph Hallock, a prominent local attorney, bought the brick house and lot. It was sold by his estate in 1894. The house is valued as a well-preserved, unusual vernacular design and as a landmark of West Catskill, showing the wealth of successful professionals and businessmen in a small mid-nineteenth-century Hudson River village.","period_of_significance":"ca.1855","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival; Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the porch decking, original posts and balustrade were replaced in 1992 due to deterioration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.504485-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95000958.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000958/a5a7db42ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000958/a5a7db42ae-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Lvklock","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JosephHallockHouse.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Lvklock</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:JosephHallockHouse.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317966","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Hallock_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6283740"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/greene-county/hallock-joseph-house-95000958/"}
