The house dates to about 1770, and the shed to about 1880.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding regional example of mid-eighteenth-century linear stone dwelling architecture typical of the Hudson Valley and Ulster County. It is one of eleven one-and-one-half story houses in Rochester with at least one all-stone gable end. It is also one of only five local stone houses with a single sidelight beside the front door.","narrative":"Hidden at the end of a winding unpaved drive through woods in the town of Rochester, Ulster County, this one-and-one-half story stone house dates to about 1770. It is said to have been built by Jacob F. Markle, who married a daughter of Joseph Kelder and built on part of the original Kelder grant. The south front has five symmetrical bays, six-over-six windows, two gabled dormers and a single sidelight beside the door. Both gable ends are solid stone up to the roof ridge, a feature found on only eleven houses of this height in the town. A basement door under a small gabled porch may reflect an eighteenth-century use as a store. The property also holds a wood-shingled shed from about 1880 with a garage added about 1930. The house was listed as a regional example of the linear stone dwelling form that dominated Ulster County building from the late seventeenth to mid nineteenth century. It remains a private residence.","period_of_significance":"ca.1770, 1880","architect_builder":"Jacob F.
