It is also significant for its link to merchant John Hook (1745-1808), for health and medicine through Dr. John A. Moorman's ca. 1890 office, and for architecture. The nomination argues statewide significance.","narrative":"This farm at Hales Ford, in northeast Franklin County, Virginia, preserves buildings and sites spanning more than a century of use. Its main house is a ca. 1855 Greek Revival farmhouse that incorporates an earlier dwelling. Behind it stands a small frame building with Georgian detailing, identified as the ca. 1784 store of Scottish-born merchant John Hook and later used as a slave quarter. A ca. 1890 office holds the preserved shelves, work table and handwritten notes of Dr. John A. Moorman, who practiced here. Ruins, a spring, an ice pond site and other archaeological features add to the district. Hook built a large business and estate of about 40,000 acres and 110 enslaved people at his death in 1808. The farm was listed for its association with Hook, for the rare surviving store, for the doctor's office, and for its architecture. Its period of significance runs from about 1782 to 1912, the year Moorman died.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1782-1912","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Georgian; Greek Revival","criteria":["A","B","C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant on the form; former uses included a single dwelling, department store and health care clinic.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.878812-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/54/6807/41680754/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/95000893.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000893/757033f4ae-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000893/757033f4ae-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hook-Powell-Moorman_Farmhouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hook-Powell-Moorman_Farmhouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680754","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hook%E2%80%93Powell%E2%80%93Moorman_Farm","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712570"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/franklin/hook-powell-moorman-farm-95000893/"}
