The builder and architect are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is one of Napa's best residential examples of the Second Empire style, which was rare locally. Only five Second Empire buildings were built in Napa between 1870 and 1889. It retains its mansard roof, ornate cornice and bracketwork, original interior plan and detailing, and a historic setting with its original hitching post and century-old trees.","narrative":"Built around 1875 on First Street in Napa's Boggs Addition, this two-and-one-half-story frame house is a Second Empire residence topped by a flared mansard roof covered in octagonal cedar shingles. Arched dormer windows, pierced scrollwork brackets, dentil work and a columned front portico flanked by two five-sided bays give the exterior its ornate character. A second-floor addition and enclosed sunporch followed in 1880. Inside, the original floor plan survives, along with oak floors, marble fireplaces, a curved mahogany staircase and art-glass transoms. The setting retains an original cast-iron hitching post, palms planted in 1895, and two magnolias more than a century old. The property is significant for architecture. Napa saw only five Second Empire buildings between 1870 and 1889, so the style was rare locally, and this house is considered one of the best residential examples. Its architect and builder are unknown. The house remains a single-family home in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":"Circa 1875, 1880","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Empire (mansard)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition and still in use as a single dwelling, with few alterations since construction.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.55274-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/95000786.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000786/4a77695ecf-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000786/4a77695ecf-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Williams_Smith_House,_1929_First_St.,_Napa,_CA_9-5-2010_6-13-29_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Williams_Smith_House,_1929_First_St.,_Napa,_CA_9-5-2010_6-13-29_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860092","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133308592"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/napa-county/smith-williams-house-95000786/"}
