The courthouse was designed by the Macon firm Dennis & Dennis.","why_significant":"The courthouse is a good, intact example of a Colonial Revival community landmark building from the 1930s, and the work of Georgia's oldest architectural firm. The jail is an intact turn-of-the-century correction facility and the county's first brick jail. Together they have been the center of county government in McRae since 1902.","narrative":"Telfair County's courthouse and jail stand together on Courthouse Square in McRae, Georgia. The two-story brick courthouse was rebuilt in 1934 after a fire on February 9 destroyed the 1904 building, reusing that building's walls. Macon architects Dennis & Dennis designed it in the Colonial Revival style, with an in antis portico, three arched entrances, paired pilasters, arched windows and keystones. Inside, terrazzo floors, original hardware and a classically detailed courtroom survive. Beside it is the 1902 brick jail, the first brick jail in the county, which the county still uses. The complex is listed for its role as the center of county government and for its architecture. The courthouse is the fourth in McRae and the sixth in Telfair County. It is also one of seven Georgia courthouses of its era not documented as funded by Depression relief programs.","period_of_significance":"1902-1945 (amended by the Keeper from the 1904-1945 stated in the form)","architect_builder":"Dennis & Dennis - architect; A. E. The courthouse has had no major changes to its interior or exterior.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:42.998186-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/95000720.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000720/5a10b6260f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000720/5a10b6260f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Telfair_County_Courthouse,_side,_McRae,_GA,_US.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Bubba73 (Jud McCranie)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Telfair_County_Courthouse,_side,_McRae,_GA,_US.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206620","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telfair_County_Courthouse_and_Jail","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q17049968"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/telfair-county/telfair-county-courthouse-and-jail-95000720/"}
