It has been the center of county government since it was built, and it was a major Depression-era public works project funded by the WPA after a tornado destroyed the previous courthouse. Its WPA-era landscaped grounds add landscape architecture significance.","narrative":"Hall County's courthouse in Gainesville, Georgia, was built in 1936-1937 after an April 1936 tornado destroyed the previous courthouse. Funded by the Works Progress Administration and designed by the Atlanta firm Daniell & Beutell, it has two stories and a basement, marble facing, a central clock tower, flat-roofed wings and a symmetrical facade. Its restrained classical details, including pilasters between windows and pedimented entrances, reflect the Stripped Classical style common for government buildings from the 1920s through the 1940s. Inside, marble, terrazzo floors and an elaborate courtroom survive. The surrounding grounds, with sidewalks, shade trees and a monument to President Franklin D. Roosevelt's visit, date to the same WPA project. The building is the sixth courthouse in the county and has served as the center of county government since it opened. A 1976 annex was added at the rear, and the courthouse remains in use today. It is one of 12 documented Georgia courthouses funded through federal Depression-era relief programs.","period_of_significance":"1936-1945","architect_builder":"1936 Hall County Courthouse - Daniell & Beutell, Atlanta; 1976 Courthouse Annex - Jacobs, Matthews, & Parker, Inc., Gainesville","architectural_style":"Stripped Classical","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a courthouse and county government offices; a 1976 annex is connected to the original building by two enclosed walkways.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.345616-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/95000717.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000717/4748642e88-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000717/4748642e88-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Calvin Beale","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hall_County_Georgia_Courthouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Calvin Beale</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hall_County_Georgia_Courthouse.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"02000873","name":"Gainesville Commercial Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/georgia/gainesville-commercial-historic-district-02000873/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93206222","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Hall_County_Courthouse_(Georgia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16896139"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/hall-county/hall-county-courthouse-95000717/"}
