It preserves a high-style neighborhood of estates and house lots showing Colonial through Craftsman styles. It also records Milton's change from a rural town to a prosperous Boston suburb.","narrative":"Milton Hill is a residential district of about 220 acres in northern Milton, Massachusetts, just south of Boston. It contains 259 resources, including 244 buildings, and most of the contributing ones are 2 1/2-story wood-frame houses with barns, carriage houses and garages. Their dates run from the Gooch-Churchill House of 1740, the oldest house and only Georgian example, through Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, Queen Anne, Colonial Revival and Craftsman designs. The Captain Robert Bennet Forbes House, designed by Isaiah Rogers in 1833, is a National Historic Landmark. The district grew from large estates, such as the former Hutchinson land, that were subdivided in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Milton became a prosperous suburb. Merchants and tradesmen from Milton Village built homes along School Street and Randolph Avenue. Stone walls, shade trees and Governor Hutchinson's Field add to the setting. Few houses from the period of significance, 1740-1945, have been lost or heavily altered since.","period_of_significance":"1740-1945","architect_builder":"Isaiah Rogers (Captain Robert Bennet Forbes House); local housewright Francis Campbell (attributed, Seth Whitney House); various local carpenters","architectural_style":"Colonial: Georgian, New England Colonial; Federal; Greek Revival; Italianate; Second Empire; Queen Anne; Stick; Shingle; Colonial Revival; Tudor Revival; Craftsman","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Dwellings are described as in good to excellent condition; the district remains largely residential, with a church, a schoolhouse converted to a residence, and open space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.609826-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/78/7962/63796278/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/95000698.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000698/4ee16ab51b-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000698/4ee16ab51b-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jameslwoodward","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Governor_Hutchinsons_Field_Milton_MA_01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Jameslwoodward</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Governor_Hutchinsons_Field_Milton_MA_01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63796278","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milton_Hill_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715712"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/norfolk-county/milton-hill-historic-district-95000698/"}
