The bridge was built in 1901 over the Cape Fear River at Lillington in Harnett County and re-erected at its present site in 1932.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the bridge is one of the few surviving examples of an important phase of transportation and engineering history in North Carolina. It was among 35 metal truss bridges judged eligible for listing as the best examples of their types with high integrity of form and setting. Only four camelback trusses from the 1979 inventory remained standing in 1995.","narrative":"A steel camelback truss bridge spanning the Deep River in a rural setting of woods and farmland between Chatham and Lee counties, North Carolina. The bridge is 160 feet long, with a deck fifteen and one-half feet wide and set thirty-four feet above the water. Its two identical steel trusses are each divided into eight panels, joined by portal, lateral and sway bracing, and pin-jointed. The northern end rests on a random-laid undressed stone pier, which is thought to date from the first bridge at the site in the nineteenth century, while two concrete piers support the south end. Approach spans were rebuilt in 1950. The bridge was first erected in 1901 as part of a multi-span crossing over the Cape Fear River at Lillington. After a span collapsed in December 1930, salvaged spans were reused, and one was re-erected here in 1932. It was judged eligible as one of the best surviving examples of its type in the state's metal truss inventory.","period_of_significance":"1910-1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: camelback truss","criteria":["C"],"status_note":null,"vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:42.153135-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/71/7195/47719571/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/95000696.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000696/f991d41695-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000696/f991d41695-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ggpauly","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Deep_River_Camelback_Bridge,_Aug_2012.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ggpauly</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Deep_River_Camelback_Bridge,_Aug_2012.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47719571","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deep_River_Camelback_Truss_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5250268"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/chatham-county/deep-river-camelback-truss-bridge-95000696/"}
