It contains 107 contributing and 17 noncontributing resources, mostly houses, brick commercial buildings, a railroad depot and two churches, built mainly after a 1910 fire.","why_significant":"The district is listed under Criterion C for architecture. It offers a textbook sampling of late nineteenth and early twentieth century domestic styles and building types in a village setting. Uniform lot sizes, setbacks and scale, with little new construction, give it a high degree of integrity.","narrative":"Holland is a small railroad village in the rural southwest of Suffolk, Virginia. The present community dates from the late nineteenth century, when the Atlantic and Danville Railroad came through, though the earlier settlement of Holland's Corner goes back to the eighteenth century. Most buildings date from after a major fire in 1910. The district holds 107 contributing buildings and sites, including frame I-houses, T- and L-plan dwellings, Queen Anne houses, brick American Foursquares, bungalows and Colonial Revival homes. Brick commercial buildings line South Quay Road, and a frame railroad depot stands near the tracks. Two brick churches, Holland Christian (1918, built by German immigrant R. H. Riedel) and Holland Baptist (1922), reflect the importance of religion locally. The district was recognized for its architecture: a varied collection of styles united by consistent lot sizes, setbacks and scale, with few intrusions since the early twentieth century. Seventeen resources, such as gas stations and recent houses, do not contribute.","period_of_significance":"1860-1944","architect_builder":"Riedel, R.
