It was built in 1889 for the banker A. W. Buck.","why_significant":"The house is significant as a high style Queen Anne residence that retains a high degree of architectural integrity in both its exterior and interior features. Its interior finishes, intact fireplaces, woodwork and layout are described as unusual for the town and county. The nomination also ties the house to A. W. Buck, a prominent local banker.","narrative":"Built in 1889 for the Ebensburg banker A. W. Buck, this two and one-half story brick house on the west side of town is a high style Queen Anne residence with an asymmetrical plan and an eight-sided three-story tower. A north wing with a ballroom and a second tower was added in 1903 for the wedding of Buck's daughter, Blanch. The interior is unusually well preserved, with a parquet floor of cherry and oak, decorative art glass, marble and faux marble fireplaces, a beamed oak entry ceiling, and an oak staircase with turned spindles. The house passed to the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1923, who used it as a convent and altered some rooms, and the Cambria County Historical Society acquired it in 1990. It is regarded as one of the best preserved Victorian mansions in Ebensburg, and its intact interior is the main reason for its listing.","period_of_significance":"1889-1903","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used by the Cambria County Historical Society as a museum and for storage of collections; the historical society has plans for further restoration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:37.328756-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/95000521.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000521/05e7c276d5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000521/05e7c276d5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A.W._Buck_House_west.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:A.W._Buck_House_west.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71995405","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A._W._Buck_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4647438"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/cambria-county/buck-a-w-house-95000521/"}
