It was built in 1899 and is in the Shingle style.","why_significant":"It is significant for architecture as a distinctive and exceptionally intact late nineteenth-century passenger station in rural Ulster County. It is also significant for transportation, through its link to the railroad that opened the Catskills to resort development and carried passengers from the Hudson Valley to the area's hotels. It is described as the largest, most elaborate and best preserved of the surviving Ulster and Delaware stations.","narrative":"Built in 1899 beside the Esopus Creek flood plain, this railroad station served the Ulster and Delaware Railroad at Phoenicia, a junction for branches north and the main line west. It is a long, low, wood-frame building with shingle walls, flared lower walls, a broad hipped roof with exposed rafters and oversized brackets, and a bluestone and ashlar foundation. Inside, narrow beaded yellow pine boards finish the walls and ceilings, and the waiting room keeps its original benches, ticket windows and fixtures. The station matters for its design and for its role in carrying New York City visitors to Catskill resort hotels; the railroad carried 675,000 passengers in 1913. No architect has been identified. Of the line's three large stations, one has been demolished and another converted to a bar, while this one remains intact. Passenger service ended in 1954. The Empire State Railway Museum acquired the station in 1985, restored it, and now operates it as a museum and passenger terminal.","period_of_significance":"1899-1932","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Shingle style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Restored with little change to the original and now used as both a museum and a passenger terminal for the Catskill Mountain Railroad.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.634517-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95000474.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000474/14b6743a61-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000474/14b6743a61-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phoenicia,_NY,_railroad_station.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Phoenicia,_NY,_railroad_station.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322705","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phoenicia_station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7186710"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/phoenicia-railroad-station-95000474/"}
