Its congregation, formed in 1739, is the earliest extant Presbyterian congregation in Southside Virginia. It also petitioned the General Assembly in 1776 to disestablish the Church of England.","narrative":"Buffalo Presbyterian Church is a plain, weatherboarded frame meetinghouse on a rural road near Pamplin, Virginia, with a cemetery beside it. The congregation formed in 1739 and moved half a mile to this site in 1804, after fire destroyed an earlier building. The core of the church measures 50 by 26 feet and has a standing seam metal gable roof and nine-over-nine windows. Early in the twentieth century the entrance was turned to the east, the gallery removed and an apse added, and in 1931 a vestibule with two small classrooms was built. Inside, paneled box pews, wood floors, a plank ceiling and two cast iron wood stoves survive. The church is valued as a typical but increasingly rare example of an early-nineteenth-century rural church. Its congregation is the oldest extant Presbyterian group in Southside Virginia, and in 1776 it was the first to petition the General Assembly to disestablish the Church of England.","period_of_significance":"c. 1804-1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic; Other: Vernacular","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as an active church with a well-maintained cemetery; the building has no plumbing or heating systems apart from two wood-burning stoves.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.679136-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/6826/41682662/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/95000395.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000395/c4a52f731d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000395/c4a52f731d-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Buffalo_PCUSA,_Prince_Edward_County.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Buffalo_PCUSA,_Prince_Edward_County.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682662","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_Presbyterian_Church_(Pamplin,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4985814"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/prince-edward-county/buffalo-presbyterian-church-95000395/"}
