Ray's Addition on a corner lot.","why_significant":"The house is nominated under Criterion C for architecture. It combines Queen Anne, Craftsman and Prairie School features and is one of the most intact early dwellings to survive redevelopment in East Dallas. It also reflects the shift in domestic tastes in the early 20th century, when middle-class frame houses replaced older Victorian estates.","narrative":"Built around 1906 at 4602 Reiger Avenue in East Dallas, this 2 1/2-story frame house is a stylistic hybrid. Its asymmetrical massing, cutaway corners at the front wing and varied exterior materials reflect Queen Anne traditions, while heavy bracketed eaves suggest Craftsman design and the broad, horizontal porch on squat columns and brick pedestals recalls the Prairie School. A band of staggered wood shingles runs along the top of the second floor. The house was built for Thomas Shiels, a vice-president of Citizens Planing Mill, which made custom woodwork and interior finish. He probably contracted or oversaw construction himself, as did several neighboring builders and craftsmen. The house dates from the earliest years of East Dallas's most prolific residential building period and survives as one of the most intact and best-maintained early dwellings on the street. It was listed for its architecture, as an example of the middle-class houses that replaced older Victorian estates.","period_of_significance":"1906","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Movements: Craftsman (hybrid with Queen Anne and Prairie School features)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in very good condition with no major exterior alterations; still used as a single dwelling.
