Carroll Avenue in East Dallas, Texas, completed in 1920. The architect and builder are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is an outstanding local example of early 20th-century Gothic Revival architecture under Criterion C. Few Gothic Revival churches in East Dallas retain their integrity as well. Its large stained-glass window under a segmental arch, cast-stone traceries, buttresses and strong vertical emphasis are noted as characteristic features.","narrative":"Built in 1920 at 1530 N. Carroll Avenue in East Dallas, this brick church was constructed for the Central Congregational Church congregation, which had organized in 1902 as growth spread east of downtown. The one-story sanctuary has a gabled roof, cast-stone detailing, paired buttresses flanking the entrance, and a stepped parapet. Its most distinctive feature is a large stained-glass window set in a segmental arch above the entrance, unusual for a Gothic Revival building. Side walls have four tall windows with stained glass and cast-stone tracery. A two-story Sunday School wing at the rear gives the building an L-shaped plan and repeats the buttress detailing in a more modest form. The congregation sold the building in 1956 and moved north; it later became a Methodist church. Only the modern entrance doors are noted as significant alterations. The property was listed for its architecture, as a locally notable and well-preserved Gothic Revival church in East Dallas.","period_of_significance":"1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as well maintained and little changed since 1920, apart from modern metal-and-glass entrance doors. It is currently in religious use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.267416-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/62/9686/40968662/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/95000307.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000307/37729224ee-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000307/37729224ee-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_Congregational_Church.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Central_Congregational_Church.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968662","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_Congregational_Church_(Dallas)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5060635"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/dallas-county/central-congregational-church-95000307/"}
