It hosted community events, civic groups, school functions and wartime meetings. It is also described as a well-preserved example of Spanish Revival design and the only building of its kind in the city.","narrative":"Built in 1925 at the corner of South Park Avenue and Los Angeles Street, the Montebello Woman's Club clubhouse is a wood-frame, stucco Spanish Colonial Revival building on a concrete foundation. It has a cross gable roof, recessed porches and many semicircular arched openings. Inside are a foyer, sitting room, main hall with stage, kitchen, committee room and caretaker's quarters. The club formed in 1909 and raised funds for years to buy the lots in 1923 and build the hall, designed by architect John C. Hanigan, who donated his services. The original clay tile roof was replaced with asphalt shingles in 1928 after an inspector found a wall weakness. The building matters because, between 1925 and 1945, it was the city's main venue for dances, banquets, school proms, naturalization classes, service club meetings and wartime civil defense gatherings. The floor plan and interior remain largely unchanged, and the club still uses it.","period_of_significance":"1925 - 1945","architect_builder":"HANIGAN, JOHN C. / YARIAN, WILSON F.","architectural_style":"Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Described as in very good condition with minimal alterations since 1925, and still used as a clubhouse and meeting hall.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.375688-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/95000266.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000266/82520c186c-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000266/82520c186c-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MONTEBELLO_WOMAN%27S_CLUB_LOS_ANGELES_COUNTY_CA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859329","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133285875"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/montebello-womans-club-95000266/"}
