It reflects the architectural tastes of the wealthy planters who directed its construction. It has changed little since 1846 apart from a later vestry addition.","narrative":"Wickliffe Church, a brick Greek Revival building of 1846, sits on a knoll beside Route 608 in northeastern Clarke County, Virginia. It replaced a stone church of 1819 that burned or was declared unsafe and was dismantled. The bricks were burned on the neighboring Smithfield farm, and construction was overseen by Jaquelin Smith. The church has a distyle in antis portico with Doric columns, stepped gable ends, an open belfry and a plain interior of white plaster, oak box pews and an oak communion rail. A small vestry room was added later, but little else has changed, and the building has no modern electrical or plumbing fixtures. A cemetery lies behind it. The congregation declined and moved to Grace Episcopal Church in Berryville in 1918, yet the building is still maintained and used for an annual homecoming service. It was listed as a well-preserved example of an antebellum Episcopal church reflecting the tastes of local planters.","period_of_significance":"1846","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Not in regular use since 1918, but maintained by trustees of Grace Church; hosts an annual August homecoming service and occasional weddings and special events.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.053297-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/12/6802/41680212/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/95000241.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000241/1ae0419b14-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000241/1ae0419b14-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WickliffeChurch_0234.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WickliffeChurch_0234.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"96001173","name":"Long Marsh Run Rural Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/virginia/long-marsh-run-rural-historic-district-96001173/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680212","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wickliffe_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713529"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/clarke-county/wickliffe-church-95000241/"}
