The frame Gothic Revival church was completed in 1891, and the adjoining cemetery dates from about 1822.","why_significant":"The site was an eighteenth-century campground and meeting place called Eden and is tied to the growth of Methodism, including the Methodist Protestant break from the episcopacy, in Guilford County. The church is a rare surviving simple, vernacular Gothic Revival frame church and the best preserved of its type in the rural county. The cemetery is notable for its variety of nineteenth to mid-twentieth century granite funerary art.","narrative":"Tabernacle Methodist Protestant Church and Cemetery occupies a knoll along Liberty Road, roughly ten miles south of Greensboro. The weatherboarded frame sanctuary, finished in June 1891 for $2,500, is a simple Gothic Revival design with a five-bay plan, stained glass windows and an interior of original heart-pine ceiling, wainscot, pews and pulpit. Behind and beside it lies a cemetery whose oldest marked stone dates from 1822, with granite obelisks, urns, lamb figures and tablet markers from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The site began as an eighteenth-century campground called Eden, visited by Methodist circuit riders, and later hosted several annual conferences of the Methodist Protestant Church. It was listed for its role in Methodism in Guilford County, for the church as a well-preserved rural frame church, and for the variety of funerary art in the graveyard. Newer brick buildings stand nearby, but the 1891 church is the only nineteenth-century building left.","period_of_significance":"1822-1945","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The church and cemetery remain in religious and funerary use. A new brick sanctuary and wings were added nearby in 1968, 1975 and 1994.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.309068-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/96/7205/47720596/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/95000231.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000231/5b7c049fbc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000231/5b7c049fbc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rhpotter","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tabernacle_Methodist_Protestant_Church_(Greensboro,_North_Carolina)_first_building.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rhpotter</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tabernacle_Methodist_Protestant_Church_(Greensboro,_North_Carolina)_first_building.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720596","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabernacle_Methodist_Protestant_Church_and_Cemetery","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7673035"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/guilford-county/tabernacle-methodist-protestant-church-and-cemetery-95000231/"}
