It was the first of four houses of worship built in the village between 1828 and 1861. It is the only one of those four still standing, and it reflects the Scots-Irish and Pennsylvania origins of some of the earliest settlers.","narrative":"Kilgore Union Presbyterian Church is a one-story brick meeting house on the southern edge of Kilgore, Carroll County, Ohio. Built in 1828, it has a gable-front plan, common-bond brickwork, a cut stone foundation, a centered Gothic arch entry with paired doors, and four Gothic arch art glass windows along each side. Inside are the original pews, stenciled plaster walls, a wooden baptismal font and an altar mural of a Middle Eastern town. A storm in 1881 blew off the roof and largely destroyed the front wall, so the repairs added a standing seam metal roof and Gothic arches to the upper windows and doorway. The steeple was removed in the late 1940s. The church was the first of four built in the village between 1828 and 1861 and is the only one that survives. It was listed for its association with the early settlement of the community and its Scots-Irish and Pennsylvania roots. Services ended around 1944, but the cemetery is still maintained.","period_of_significance":"1828","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Gothic Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Not used for services since about 1944; the current function is listed as vacant, though the surrounding cemetery is maintained and the building retains a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.459791-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/95000166.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000166/bd0f32cce9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000166/bd0f32cce9-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Roseohioresident","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kilgore_Union_UPC_Ohio001.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Roseohioresident</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kilgore_Union_UPC_Ohio001.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71987009","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kilgore_Union_Presbyterian_Church","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6406873"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/carroll-county/kilgore-union-presbyterian-church-95000166/"}
