It is one of the few largely unaltered examples of a traditional house type and local building tradition. It is also one of the few nineteenth-century houses in the county still owned by the builder's descendants.","narrative":"Built in 1878 on the west side of SR 1388 near Calvert, this farmstead in Transylvania County centers on a two-story, timber-frame, weatherboarded I-house with a striking two-tiered, cross-gabled front porch. Flem Galloway, a Confederate veteran, is said to have planned the design while serving in Virginia. Local builder Joshua Orr constructed it from native oak, locust and pine, with locally quarried stone for the chimneys and foundation piers. Imported blue glass in the transoms and sidelights is a notable decorative feature. Inside, the plank walls, wood-grained doors and Greek Revival-style mantels remain largely intact. A large weatherboarded smokehouse of the same date stands in the north yard, along with a stone terrace wall finished in 1883. Five later farm outbuildings from 1920 to 1945 complete the group. The property was listed for its architecture, as one of the county's most intact nineteenth-century, pre-railroad dwellings. The house has been vacant for about ten years, and descendants of the builder maintain it.","period_of_significance":"1878","architect_builder":"Architect: Galloway, John Flemming; Builder: Orr, Joshua","architectural_style":"Other: I-house","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The house has been vacant for ten years but is maintained by descendants of the builder.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.382559-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/91/7184/47718491/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/95000137.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000137/cb2c671863-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000137/cb2c671863-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Upstateherd","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flem_Galloway_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Upstateherd</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Flem_Galloway_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718491","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flem_Galloway_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19986609"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/transylvania-county/galloway-flem-house-95000137/"}
