It was built c. 1878 by John Minor Crawford.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is the best extant example of Italianate style in residential architecture in the Greensboro area and the largest and most detailed residence of its type among a handful of Italianate buildings there. It is significant under architecture for its late nineteenth-century Italianate design and retains its dominant features and setting. The house also reflects Crawford's cooperage and merchant business during the area's commercial growth.","narrative":"Built around 1878 by John Minor Crawford, this four-bay, two-and-a-half-story brick house in Glassworks, north of Greensboro in Greene County, Pennsylvania, shows the Italianate style with shallow pitched roofs, wide bracketed and dentiled eaves, tall narrow windows, and gable-end circular portholes. The house sits on finely cut sandstone and has a central hall with an open staircase, a molded newel post, and a spindled balustrade. Crawford worked as a cooper and later a merchant, acquiring a lot with buildings from John B. McCoy in 1866 on the old glassworks property. The house was used as a mine superintendent's office from about 1935 to 1975 and as a health center until about 1988. The property is regarded as the area's best surviving Italianate residence and the largest and most detailed of its kind nearby, and it retains most of its character despite changes to the north side of the first floor.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used as a mine superintendent's office by Duquesne Light Company from about 1935 to 1975 and as a health center from about 1977 to about 1988; the north half of the first floor was converted to a health center in the 1970s.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:35.825681-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/95000122.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000122/18a26cf172-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000122/18a26cf172-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Generic1139","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Minor_Crawford_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Generic1139</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Minor_Crawford_House.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71992981","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Minor_Crawford_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6248946"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/greene-county/crawford-john-minor-house-95000122/"}
