It is also significant for its association with the National Guard and the volunteer militia in American military history. It reflects the work of State Architects Isaac G. Perry and Lewis Pilcher.","narrative":"Olean Armory, at 119 Times Square, is a brick military building made up of two parts built nearly three decades apart. The rear drill shed dates from 1890 and was designed by State Architect Isaac G. Perry for the 43rd Separate Company of the National Guard. It has a steep hipped roof, buttresses with turret-like tops, and Romanesque-inspired detailing. An earlier mansion on the site served as the unit's headquarters until it burned in the 1910s. In 1919 State Architect Lewis Pilcher added a two-story Tudor Revival administration building in front of the drill shed, with a crenelated parapet and a fortress-like central entrance pavilion. Inside, the entrance hall, staircase, woodwork and a second-floor meeting room with original Stickley furnishings survive. The armory was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of the New York armory type, and for its link to the National Guard's role in American military history.","period_of_significance":"1890 - 1919","architect_builder":"Drill shed: Isaac Perry, State Architect; Administration building: Lewis Pilcher, State Architect","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: castellated; Early 20th Century: Tudor Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Listed current function is armory (defense); the form describes the interior as retaining a high degree of integrity and notes that Olean Armory was an active military facility as of May 1993.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.533848-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95000080.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000080/7c14a57de3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000080/7c14a57de3-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Olean_Armory_Apr_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Olean_Armory_Apr_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312162","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Olean_Armory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7085961"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cattaraugus-county/olean-armory-95000080/"}
