It is also significant for its association with American military history and the history of the National Guard.","narrative":"Built in 1905 at 4 Academy Street in Oneonta, this massive red brick and limestone armory was designed by State Architect George L. Heins for the Third Separate Company of the National Guard. It combines a two-story administration building with an attached drill shed, and its medieval-inspired design includes a five-story octagonal tower, a two and one-half story square tower, deeply recessed arcading, a step-gabled parapet and machicolated cornices. Inside, original features survive, including an oak staircase, a trophy room, oak mantels, a large company meeting room with fluted Corinthian columns, and the drill shed's original wooden floor and wainscotted ceiling. The building is considered a representative and well-preserved example of New York's early twentieth century armories, which served as military facilities, social clubhouses and civic monuments. It is also recognized for its link to the National Guard, the volunteer militia that has long been central to the American military system. It remains in use as an armory.","period_of_significance":"1905","architect_builder":"George L.
