It was built in stages between 1794 and ca. 1815, with a porch and barn added in the late nineteenth century. It keeps its exterior and interior detailing and its 'big house, little house, back house' layout.","narrative":"Morse Farm at 53 South Main Street in Moravia, New York, is a Federal-style farmhouse on a ten-acre parcel a few blocks south of the village business district. It began as a log cabin built by pioneer settler Gershom Morse in 1794, and the cabin was later folded into the kitchen of the house. The main block, a two-story frame structure with a five-bay symmetrical front, low-pitched side-gabled roof, open gable returns and a wide frieze band, took its present form around 1815. Behind it run a one-and-one-half story wing and a rear section, following the New England 'big house, little house, back house' arrangement. A Queen Anne-style porch and a board-and-batten barn were added in the late nineteenth century. Inside, oak floors, winding stairs and six-panel doors survive. The farm stayed with Morse and his descendants throughout its history. It was listed for its architectural value as one of the earliest surviving buildings in Moravia. The house is now vacant.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1794-1900","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The property is currently vacant; the current owner does not occupy the house.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.494272-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95000067.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000067/ba36e34429-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000067/ba36e34429-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morse_Farm,_Moravia,_New_York_23_45_24_740000.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Morse_Farm,_Moravia,_New_York_23_45_24_740000.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312170","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morse_Farm_(Moravia,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14707015"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/morse-farm-95000067/"}
