The house was built about 1840 and its ell was extended about 1860.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a rare, intact example of early vernacular residential architecture in Moravia, retaining its period form, materials and detailing inside and out. It also illustrates vertical plank wall construction, a method common when it was built. The carriage house is one of the few surviving Moravia outbuildings with strong Greek Revival character.","narrative":"Located a short distance west of Moravia's Main Street business district, this two-story frame house on Aurora Street, a former turnpike, was built about 1840. It has a front-gabled main block and a one-story ell, extended about 1860, giving it an L-shaped plan. Its design is plain, with narrow corner pilasters, clapboard siding, a cut stone foundation and a shouldered architrave around the front door. Inside, the historic floor plan and finishes survive, along with evidence of vertical plank wall construction. A Greek Revival carriage house, probably from about 1850, stands on the property, with a wide frieze band, an open pediment and an original plank door. The house was listed for its architecture. Gabled ell houses like this were once common in Moravia, but most survivors have been heavily altered, and this one keeps an unusually high degree of period integrity. The carriage house is one of few local outbuildings with strong Greek Revival features.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840-1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival (vernacular)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the interior retains its historic floor plan and finishes.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.541453-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95000059.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000059/47e9d9d797-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000059/47e9d9d797-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_20_Aurora_Street_21_54_06_113000.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:House_at_20_Aurora_Street_21_54_06_113000.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312178","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/House_at_20_Aurora_Street","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5914094"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/house-at-20-aurora-street-95000059/"}
