It retains its distinctive period features and integrity of construction, form, materials and detailing inside and out. The 1884 wagon shop, with an Italianate-style cornice, is a contributing feature.","narrative":"Built in 1871 at 7 Aurora Street in Moravia, this two-story brick house reflects the Italianate style popular in the village during its post-Civil War prosperity. It has a three-bay side entrance facade, relatively flat hipped roofs with bracketed cornices, elliptically arched window and door openings, original two-over-two sash, and a bracketed entrance hood. A frame rear wing, probably built at the same time, adjoins the main block. Inside, the historic floor plan, finishes and an elaborate period staircase survive. John McGeer, who operated a blacksmith shop on the property, had the house built, and he sold it in 1874 to farmer and capitalist Ebenezer Hopkins, whose family kept it until 1920. A two-story frame wagon shop built in 1884 by Patterson & Sturdevant stands at the rear. It was moved there between 1926 and 1937 and converted to an automobile garage. The property was listed for its architectural significance and its integrity.","period_of_significance":"1871 - 1884","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the former wagon shop now serves as a garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.333775-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/95000056.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000056/e1b2555846-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000056/e1b2555846-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Doncram","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_McGeer_House_00_24_19_216000.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doncram</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_McGeer_House_00_24_19_216000.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312182","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_McGeer_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6247765"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cayuga-county/mcgeer-john-house-95000056/"}
