It was the home of John Hendrickson, a master stone and brick mason, and later of the Caskey family, including civic leader W. J. Caskey. It is nominated under Criterion C at the local level.","narrative":"Built around 1871 in Salado, this one-story frame house began as two small rooms separated by a dog trot and grew into an L-plan dwelling. Its walls are board and batten over box-frame construction, set on a pier-and-beam foundation with hand-hewn log joists, and a limestone chimney marks the east end. John Hendrickson, a master stone and brick mason who worked on Salado College and other area landmarks, first appears on tax records here in 1871. He added a room in 1871-72. John Coffey Caskey bought the property in 1875, and his son W. J. Caskey, a Grange member and school supporter, later enlarged the house in 1893. The First Baptist Church used it as a parsonage from 1909 to 1924. A porch was enclosed in 1939, and a 1988 rehabilitation removed later siding to reveal the original boards. The house is valued as a modest, rare surviving example of box-and-board construction in a town of grander homes.","period_of_significance":"1871-72; 1893; 1939","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Vernacular L-plan","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; rehabilitated in 1988 after severe deterioration, with exterior work complete and some interior and cistern work still pending.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.738398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/79/9682/40968279/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/95000054.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000054/19f62bdc19-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/95000054/19f62bdc19-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Renelibrary","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HendricksonCaskey1.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Renelibrary</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:HendricksonCaskey1.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40968279","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110001541"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/bell-county/hendrickson-caskey-house-95000054/"}
