Builder and designer are unknown.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an unusual and intact example of a Georgian-type cottage with a modified central hall plan and an original L-shaped rear wing under one large hipped roof. It also shows Italianate and Greek Revival detailing and is larger and more formal than most rural Cobb County houses, which are modest wood-framed vernacular homes.","narrative":"Set on a wooded 13-acre lot along Pine Mountain Road west of Kennesaw, this one-story brick house was probably built in the 1870s. Its plan is unusual for Georgia: a Georgian-style main block, with a central hall and two rooms on each side, joined to an original L-shaped rear wing. Together they form a rectangle beneath a single large hipped roof. Details include penciled mortar joints, segmentally arched windows, original six-over-six sash, and a front door with arched panels. Transoms and sidelights reflect Greek Revival influence. Original wide-board floors, ceilings and many moldings survive inside. The house is named for Hiram Butler, a Western and Atlantic Railroad employee from 1849 until 1907, who lived there longer than any other resident. A 1952 renovation added a classical portico and a screened porch. The house was listed for its architecture, as a distinctive and intact example of the Georgian cottage type in a county of mostly modest wooden farmhouses.","period_of_significance":"c.1870","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid 19th Century: Greek Revival; Victorian: Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling; the interior has been modified and the grounds have a nonhistoric greenhouse and garage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.391495-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/94001637.pdf"},"photo":null,"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93207559","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":null},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/cobb-county/butler-hiram-house-94001637/"}
