McLean over an earlier log house. It has a rear ell and three outbuildings.","why_significant":"The house is locally significant in architecture under Criterion C as one of a small group of well-preserved vernacular Greek Revival houses in rural Guilford County, and the only one that is an I-House. Its pedimented entrance portico recalls the Dr. Shubal Coffin House in Jamestown. The interior plan and finish are remarkably unaltered.","narrative":"Set on a small knoll beside US 70 near Sedalia, this two-story frame house was built about 1850 for Dr. Joseph A. McLean, a locally prominent physician, around the time of his marriage to Elizabeth Wharton. It completely overbuilt an earlier log hall-and-parlor dwelling, probably put up by the Wharton family in the 1830s. The main block is one room deep and three bays wide, with weatherboard siding, a low gable roof, and a one-story pedimented portico with simplified Doric columns. A rear ell was added later. Inside, a center-hall plan, wide horizontal board walls, two-panel grained doors, and simple post-and-lintel mantels survive largely intact. Three outbuildings stand behind the house, including an early log house with a loft. McLean practiced medicine from the home and farmed the surrounding land. The house was listed for architecture as one of a few well-preserved vernacular Greek Revival houses in rural Guilford County, and the only I-House among them.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Greek Revival (vernacular)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Remains in family ownership; rented to a contractor who is restoring the interior. Surrounding farmland is slated for residential subdivision.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.415764-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/7205/47720506/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/94001632.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001632/1096dc8f7d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001632/1096dc8f7d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Eastward Gypsy","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_McLean_House_facade.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Eastward Gypsy</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Joseph_McLean_House_facade.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47720506","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Joseph_A._McLean_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19987057"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/guilford-county/mclean-dr-joseph-a-house-94001632/"}
