Wood and remodeled in the Classical Revival style in 1914-1917 by Henry Tellkamp. A brick smokehouse and a garage are also included.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is locally significant in architecture under Criterion C. It is described as the most intact example in the LaMoille area of an Italianate house with Classical Revival overlays, and as the most elaborate private residence ever built in the town. Long vacant periods left it largely original.","narrative":"Built around 1872 for Charles C. Wood, a retired farmer who settled in Bureau County in 1838, this brick house at 82 Main Street in LaMoille was designed as a cross-shaped Italianate residence. It has red brick walls, yellow brick quoins, a low-pitched cross-gabled roof, 36 sets of paired brackets and tall arched windows with yellow brick hoods. Henry Tellkamp, a farmer and local businessman, bought it at auction in 1914 and remodeled it in the Classical Revival style through 1917, adding a flat-roofed porch with square brick columns, new wiring, a boiler and oak floors. Inside, marble fireplaces, a walnut staircase and grain-painted woodwork survive. Long vacancies, from 1928 to 1941 and from 1979 to 1993, left the house unusually original. The nomination calls it the most intact Italianate house with Classical Revival changes in the LaMoille area. A brick smokehouse and a garage that began as the kitchen are also part of the property.","period_of_significance":"c. 1872-1917","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate; Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a private single-family residence; the house stood vacant from 1979 to 1993 before its sale.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.225896-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/42/8917/28891742/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/94001599.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001599/477c8f8b42-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001599/477c8f8b42-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Boscophotos","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ImageWood-Telkamp_House.jpeg\" rel=\"noopener\">Boscophotos</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ImageWood-Telkamp_House.jpeg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28891742","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wood%E2%80%93Tellkamp_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q24886841"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/bureau-county/wood-tellkamp-house-94001599/"}
