It is regarded as the finest Italianate residence in the community. It was built for Christian Miller, a Civil War veteran, county treasurer and businessman.","narrative":"Built about 1870 in Punxsutawney, the Christian Miller House is a 2½-story wood-frame residence of Italianate design, measuring 40 by 33 feet, with a slate-clad gabled roof and a cut-stone foundation. Its facade carries the most ornate detailing, including a hipped porch with dentil bands and sandwich brackets, round- and segmental-arched windows, and a main cornice with paired brackets running around all elevations. The interior retains a walnut stair, marble mantels and parquet floors in the principal rooms. The house is valued as the community's finest example of the Italianate style, which was largely out of fashion when Punxsutawney grew rapidly between 1890 and 1910. Miller, who lost a leg in the Civil War, held the post of Jefferson County Treasurer and later served as superintendent of the Mahoning Gas and Heat Company. He lived in the house until his death in 1902.","period_of_significance":"1870","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Converted to multi-family use in the mid-20th century and in the midst of rehabilitation for use as professional offices.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-haiku-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.1-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 17:11:36.754395-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_PA/94001565.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001565/ac289cb544-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001565/ac289cb544-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Punxsutawney,_Pennsylvania_(7087060279).jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, NY, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Punxsutawney,_Pennsylvania_(7087060279).jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71997888","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Miller_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5109923"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/pennsylvania/jefferson-county/miller-christian-house-94001565/"}
