It occupies an entire city block and is owned by the state.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is an outstanding late nineteenth century castellated armory and an outstanding example of State Architect Isaac Perry's work, with a high degree of integrity. It is also significant for its link to the National Guard and to Buffalo's Italian immigrant stonecutters and masons, who built it.","narrative":"Occupying a full city block facing Prospect Park in Buffalo, this massive castellated armory was completed in 1899 for the 74th Regiment of the New York National Guard. Built of Medina sandstone with limestone trim, it combines a three-story administration building, topped with towers and machicolated parapets, with a two-story drill shed. Its interior includes a grand double staircase, a two-story Grand Court with Tudor arcading and Gothic-inspired wood trusses, and richly finished meeting rooms. State Architect Isaac Perry designed it with Captain William Lansing, and it is the largest and most lavishly appointed of about twenty surviving Perry armories. Italian immigrant stonecutters and masons did much of the construction, making it a visible reminder of Buffalo's Italian community. A 1982 fire destroyed much of the drill shed, which was rebuilt as a flat-roofed structure. The armory remains in military use and was listed for its architecture, military history and ethnic heritage.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1899","architect_builder":"Isaac Perry, State Architect; Captain William Lansing","architectural_style":"Late Victorian (castellated style)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as an armory. A 1982 fire destroyed much of the drill shed, which was rebuilt and now serves as vehicle repair and storage space.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.848906-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94001543.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001543/aea7f2234a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001543/aea7f2234a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Andre Carrotflower","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ConnecticutStreetArmory-ProspectPark.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Andre Carrotflower</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:ConnecticutStreetArmory-ProspectPark.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"82005029","name":"Delaware Park-Front Park System","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/delaware-park-front-park-system-82005029/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312813","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connecticut_Street_Armory","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5161625"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/erie-county/connecticut-street-armory-94001543/"}
