It is a well-preserved example of one of several ways the Late Gothic Revival style was rendered in North Carolina in the early twentieth century. It is also the third church building of a congregation organized in 1815.","narrative":"This brick church at 114 West Main Street in Lincolnton was built in 1917-1918 in the Late Gothic Revival style. Its gable-front facade is flanked by twin towers with belfries, and a three-part arcade serves as the entrance porch. Dark red brick, cast stone trim, cement-capped buttresses, lancet-arched windows and a slate roof define the exterior. Some stained glass was reused from the congregation's earlier 1891-1892 church. Inside, a modified Akron plan combines a theater-style sanctuary with an adjoining Sunday school alcove. A brick arcade links the church to an educational building and fellowship hall designed by Harold Eugene Wagoner and built in 1956-1957. The congregation dates to 1815, when it was organized as Emanuel's Presbyterian Church. It is the congregation's third building in town. Its 1890s move to Main Street began a trend later followed by the Reformed, Methodist and Baptist congregations. The church was listed for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1917-1918","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Gothic Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use; the church and its attached educational building remain in use by the congregation, which also runs a day school on the grounds.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.674752-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/85/7181/47718185/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/94001455.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001455/b4ae902ac5-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001455/b4ae902ac5-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RoxylovesHistory","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_(front_view),_114_W._Main_Street,_Lincolnton,_NC.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RoxylovesHistory</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Presbyterian_Church_(front_view),_114_W._Main_Street,_Lincolnton,_NC.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718185","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_(Lincolnton,_North_Carolina)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453592"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/lincoln-county/first-presbyterian-church-94001455/"}
