It is also described as the state's first fully realized example of Edward Durell Stone's mature work. It won a National First Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1958.","narrative":"Completed in 1958 at 3360 East Foothill Boulevard in Pasadena, this two-story plant and office building was designed by architect Edward Durell Stone for a pharmaceutical company. The steel and concrete structure measures about 190 by 190 feet and is fronted by a white concrete screen wall 403 feet long, gold-lacquered steel columns and a reflecting pool with fountains. Inside, a two-story atrium is lit by 81 skylights and has block walls imprinted with pill shapes. To the east, a courtyard holds an elliptical employee swimming pool, orange-tree planters, a hyperbolic paraboloid pavilion and a bath house. The building was listed for architecture as an early and exceptionally fine California example of the New Formalist style and a key work in Stone's career. It received a National First Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects in 1958, and later additions and a ramp have only modestly changed it. The property is now recorded as vacant.","period_of_significance":"1958","architect_builder":"Stone, Edward Durell","architectural_style":"Modern Movement: New Formalism","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant/not in use; minimal alterations since 1958 (ramp, 1960 and 1970 additions).","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:26.868776-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/94001326.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001326/2fe074abb6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001326/2fe074abb6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Robert Skolmen Bobskol854","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stuart_Pharmaceuticals.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert Skolmen Bobskol854</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Stuart_Pharmaceuticals.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123859562","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133294702"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/los-angeles-county/stuart-company-plant-and-office-building-94001326/"}
