It is also tied to Dr. Charles D. Clawson, who from 1883 used it as his family home and cancer treatment center for the Bethesda Sanitarium, reflecting the local water-cure industry. The form recommends local significance.","narrative":"Built in 1828 at 108 Catharine Street in Montour Falls, this two-story, five-bay brick building began as a tavern and later became known as the Clawson House. Its Federal design includes a recessed central entrance, stepped gable ends with paired chimneys, a low metal-clad roof and a limestone foundation. The front wall is laid in Flemish bond. Later changes include late nineteenth-century window hoods and a replaced staircase, a 1908 rear addition and a 1954 porch, though the original center-hall layout is still discernible. In 1883 Dr. Charles D. Clawson bought the tavern and moved his family home and cancer treatment center into it. For about forty years he and his wife ran the Bethesda Sanitarium, a fifty-bed hospital offering surgery, hydrotherapy, electrotherapy and a nursing school, during the last years of the water-cure era. Today the building serves as a museum and houses a historical society library.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":[],"status_note":"Current functions listed are museum, with a historical society library in the building; historic functions include hotel, dwelling, restaurant and sanitarium.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.391356-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94001283.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001283/bc7bb46224-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001283/bc7bb46224-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brick_Tavern,_Montour_Falls,_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brick_Tavern,_Montour_Falls,_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321791","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brick_Tavern_Stand","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4965950"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/schuyler-county/brick-tavern-stand-94001283/"}
