It is also significant for politics/government as the village hall and police and fire headquarters from 1938 to 1944.","narrative":"Built in 1891 by Charles Harnbel, this red, two-story wood-frame building at 108 East Lake Street in Bloomingdale served first as a district schoolhouse. It is described as the only known two-story frame schoolhouse in the Bloomingdale area, where most schools had a single story. It has a gabled asphalt roof, a mansard-roofed bell tower, pedimented window caps and an enclosed front porch. Classes were held there until 1937, when the new Central School replaced it. The school district then rented the building to the village, which adapted it as village hall and as police and fire headquarters, with the north wall altered for a fire truck. It was renovated in 1977-1978, and a retail shop now occupies it. Its listing rests on two roles: education from 1891 to 1937, and local government from 1938 to 1944. It is one of the few surviving district schoolhouses in DuPage County.","period_of_significance":"1891-1937 (Education); 1938-1944 (Politics/Government)","architect_builder":"Harnbel, Charles, Builder","architectural_style":"Queen Anne","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Owned by the Village of Bloomingdale and rented to a retail store (Hats-N-Hides); renovated 1977-1978 and described as maintaining historic integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:37.722297-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/97/8927/28892797/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_IL/94001263.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001263/c2ac7d1672-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001263/c2ac7d1672-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Teemu08 (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bloomingdale_School%E2%80%93Village_Hall.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Teemu08 (talk)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bloomingdale_School%E2%80%93Village_Hall.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/28892797","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomingdale_School_(Illinois)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4928322"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/illinois/dupage-county/bloomingdale-school-village-hall-94001263/"}
