It has 30 contributing resources (21 buildings, 5 structures, 4 sites) and one non-contributing building.","why_significant":"The district is argued to be significant for the Cole-Hasbrouck family's role in founding and shaping the hamlet of Modena. John Cole's house is a landmark example of Federal-style brick architecture in the Wallkill Valley, with marblized plaster walls and Grecian ornament. The surviving farmyard, agricultural land and commercial and domestic hamlet properties show the family's mix of farming, commerce, industry and real estate.","narrative":"Cole-Hasbrouck Farm is a 68-acre complex at the crossroads hamlet of Modena, in southeastern Ulster County, New York. At its center is a two-story brick and stone house built around 1820 by John Cole, a lawyer and land speculator who assembled more than 1,000 acres nearby. The house has a five-bay Flemish bond facade, parapeted end walls with paired chimneys, and a central passage whose plaster walls imitate marble with lampblack and marble chips. Later additions include a 1907 dining wing and large porches from the 1920s. Around the house are gardens, a farmyard of barns and outbuildings, fields, and hamlet properties such as a hotel and blacksmith shop. Cole and his heirs in the Noyes and Hasbrouck families leased, managed or built these components, shaping the growth of Modena. Though land sales have reduced the original holding, the home farm and its core features remain largely intact, illustrating farming, commerce and local building traditions in the Wallkill Valley.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"John Cole (builder/owner of the mansion house)","architectural_style":"Early Republic; Other, vernacular c1820-c1920","criteria":[],"status_note":"The farm complex is described as remarkably intact; the house remains a residence and the land is still partly agricultural.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.162902-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94001240.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001240/0b8715bdfc-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001240/0b8715bdfc-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cole-Hasbrouck_Farm_buildings.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cole-Hasbrouck_Farm_buildings.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322576","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cole%E2%80%93Hasbrouck_Farm_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5142610"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/cole-hasbrouck-farm-historic-district-94001240/"}
