F. A. Pierce was hired to build it for John A. Rogers.","why_significant":"The nomination argues that Locustville is one of the few relatively unaltered surviving examples of second-quarter nineteenth-century Greek Revival architecture in Virginia's Northern Neck. It was also the home of the Rogers family, substantial landowners whose declining fortunes after the Civil War reflect the fate of many southern planter families.","narrative":"Locustville is a two-story, five-bay Greek Revival house built in 1855 on a six-acre site off State Route 625, two miles from Ottoman in rural Lancaster County, Virginia. John A. Rogers hired F. A. Pierce to rebuild the family house after an earlier dwelling burned in 1854. The wood-framed building has a central passage plan, two interior end chimneys, a rear ell, and a front porch with fluted Doric columns and a full Greek entablature. Inside, original plaster, random-width flooring, four-panel doors and Greek Revival mantels and trim survive. It has always served as a single dwelling and is being restored. The house is valued as one of the few relatively unaltered Greek Revival buildings of its era in the Northern Neck. It also reflects the Rogers family, landowners in the county since at least 1787, whose wealth declined after the Civil War as the plantation economy changed and the original tract was gradually sold off.","period_of_significance":"1855","architect_builder":"Pierce, F.
