It was built in 1928 to a design by W. H. Weeks.","why_significant":"The nomination argues it is one of the most significant buildings in Woodland's commercial development. It was the last and most lavish of the city's series of first-class hotels and is the only former first-class hotel still standing. It retains high architectural integrity despite changes to its storefronts and lobby.","narrative":"Rising four stories above Main Street in downtown Woodland, this reinforced concrete hotel opened in the fall of 1928. San Francisco architect W. H. Weeks designed it in the Spanish Colonial Revival style, with a richly ornamented central bay, Churrigueresque stone detail, clay-tile roof sections and storefronts along the ground floor. It replaced the earlier Byrns Hotel, which was razed in 1927. Local businessmen raised $50,000 for the project, and the finished building cost perhaps $500,000, making it the tallest and most expensive in the city. Guests had a bath in every room, and public spaces included a beamed lobby with fireplace and a banquet hall seating 200. It was the last of Woodland's first-class hotels, which served affluent travelers and hosted the town's social life. The other such hotels were later demolished. Upper floors remain largely unchanged, while the lobby has been partitioned and the storefronts altered. Its period of significance runs from 1928 to 1944.","period_of_significance":"1928-1944","architect_builder":"Weeks, W.H.","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Early 20th Century Movements: Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Still in hotel use at the time of nomination; storefronts remodeled and lobby partitioned; restoration was planned.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:27.697216-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/94001225.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001225/91ad338000-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001225/91ad338000-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"Epolk","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hotel_Woodland.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Epolk</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hotel_Woodland.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"99000471","name":"Downtown Woodland Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/california/downtown-woodland-historic-district-99000471/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123862392","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hotel_Woodland","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14682384"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/yolo-county/hotel-woodland-94001225/"}
