The main house dates to about 1840 and was built for David Lockhart.","why_significant":"The house is a good example of a small rural Greek Revival farmhouse with a pedimented portico and central-hall plan, retaining much original material. It is also tied to the area's cotton and corn plantation history, which continued into a dairy farm. Tradition holds that the house served as a stagecoach stop on the Macon-to-Columbus road.","narrative":"Seven miles east of Talbotton, Georgia, on GA 208, this 33-acre property preserves a Greek Revival farmhouse of about 1840 along with the remnants of a working plantation. David Lockhart began building the one-and-one-half story heart pine house after buying land in 1838-1839. It has a pedimented portico, double entrance doors with a transom, stone and handmade brick chimneys, classical mantels, wainscoting and its original floor plan. Outbuildings include a seed house, tool house, a ca. 1880 barn, a slave house chimney and the family cemetery. In antebellum years the plantation grew cotton and corn with enslaved labor, and it later became a dairy farm. Family tradition holds that the Lockharts lodged travelers on the main Macon-to-Columbus road, using an upstairs reached by an exterior stair. Lockhart also served as local postmaster from 1835 to 1842. The property is valued for its architecture, agriculture and transportation history.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840-1943","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single-family residence, with storage in the agricultural outbuildings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:55:43.035262-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_GA/94001215.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001215/f6ad33a7d3-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001215/f6ad33a7d3-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rivers Langley; SaveRivers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lockhart-Cosby_Plantation;_Talbot,_GA_(NRHP).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Rivers Langley; SaveRivers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lockhart-Cosby_Plantation;_Talbot,_GA_(NRHP).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/93209550","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q107001386"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/georgia/talbot-county/lockhart-cosby-plantation-94001215/"}
