It was the first of a series of Miesian-influenced houses Matsumoto designed while teaching at the NC State School of Design. It won a North Carolina AIA Honor Award in 1957 and was featured on the cover of Architectural Record Houses for 1957.","narrative":"Perched on a steeply sloping, wooded lot in west Raleigh, this small flat-roofed house was designed by architect and North Carolina State School of Design professor George Matsumoto as his own home and studio. Built between 1952 and 1954, it uses a post and beam frame of steel and wood laid out on an eight-foot module, cantilevered over a concrete block base. A sunken entry court and short bridge lead to a symmetrical paneled front, while the rear opens through a glazed wall to a screened porch facing the hillside and stream. Interiors are finished in fir, birch, mahogany-veneered plywood and oak. The house was listed for its architecture, as the work of a master and for its artistic quality. It earned a 1957 state AIA Honor Award and appeared on the cover of Architectural Record Houses for 1957. Reviewers praised its economy, standard materials and careful detailing. It remains a single-family residence with few alterations.","period_of_significance":"1954","architect_builder":"Architect-Matsumoto, George; Contractor-Walser, Frank","architectural_style":"Miesian","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as well maintained and little altered, still used as a single dwelling; wall panels and roofing have been replaced.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:49.406391-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/59/7185/47718559/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/94001089.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001089/71d22a70b8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001089/71d22a70b8-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"BoBSerrone","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Matsumoto_House,_821_Runnymede_Road_in_Raleigh_Built_1952.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">BoBSerrone</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Matsumoto_House,_821_Runnymede_Road_in_Raleigh_Built_1952.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47718559","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matsumoto_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q21016046"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/wake-county/matsumoto-house-94001089/"}
