It keeps its original orientation to the railway, road and mill village, and its interiors are largely intact. The mill was one of the county's major textile producers, operating on a large scale for its time.","narrative":"Thrift Mill is a former cotton textile complex in the small rural community of Thrift, about six miles west of Charlotte. Built in 1912-1913 beside the Piedmont and Northern electric railway, it was laid out around rail shipping and receiving rather than the road. The brick Main Building and Weave Department, joined by an infill around 1924, form its core. Sawtooth monitors, steel columns, I-beam rafters and segmental arch windows illustrate factory design of the period. Ancillary structures include a reservoir, two water towers and a pump house that supplied the sprinkler system. A mill village of frame dwellings lay to the west. The Thrift Manufacturing Company ran the mill for only twelve years, making print cloth, yet by 1915 it had 26,000 spindles and 157 employees, making it one of the county's major producers. The complex was recognized for its role in the Piedmont textile industry. Later additions, a warehouse with heavy alterations and a modern substation are counted as noncontributing, while the site layout remains largely intact.","period_of_significance":"1912-1944","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Other: Functional Industrial","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant/not in use, with some resources in poor condition; Pump House No. 2 is ruinous and many windows are boarded or infilled.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:50.378836-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/68/7213/47721368/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/94001049.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001049/34fe8cdfe6-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94001049/34fe8cdfe6-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"RoxylovesHistory","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Thrift_Mill_(side_view)_-_Charlotte,_NC_-_9-20-2014.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">RoxylovesHistory</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Former_Thrift_Mill_(side_view)_-_Charlotte,_NC_-_9-20-2014.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721368","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Former_Thrift_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461796"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/mecklenburg-county/thrift-mill-former-94001049/"}
