It is also known as the Lydon, John and Bessie, House.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is a very good, typically modest example of a San Francisco Stick/Eastlake cottage, with squared bay windows, vertical strips, brackets and a false mansard. It is especially notable for its unusually intact interior, including faux burled walnut graining and three original marble mantelpieces. It also retains good integrity of location, design, materials and workmanship.","narrative":"Built about 1888 at 1260 Potrero Avenue, this one-story wood-frame house with a high basement sits on the west side of the street in San Francisco's Mission District. At construction it was the southeasternmost dwelling in the district, close to a former salt marsh. Its symmetrical facade has a hooded entrance between two squared bay windows, a false mansard roof and a deep bracketed cornice, with weatherboard siding known locally as channel rustic. The interior keeps its original plan, faux burled walnut paneling, three different marble mantelpieces and softwood floors. Early residents included the Ohlandt family's newlywed children, and later John and Bessie Lydon, who lived there for nearly 40 years from 1916. The house was recognized for its architecture as a modest San Francisco Stick/Eastlake cottage. Comparison with 172 similar cottages showed it to have very good integrity, and its surviving interior finishes are described as rare. It is the only 19th-century structure left on its block.","period_of_significance":"c. 1888","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Stick/Eastlake","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; restored by its owner since 1979, with the exterior receiving only maintenance except at the entry.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:26.87593-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/94000995.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000995/7e1241560a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000995/7e1241560a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ohlandt_Newlyweds_House,_1260_Potrero_Ave.,_San_Francisco,_CA_4-14-2013_1-43-01_PM.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ohlandt_Newlyweds_House,_1260_Potrero_Ave.,_San_Francisco,_CA_4-14-2013_1-43-01_PM.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123861226","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133504699"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-francisco/ohlandt-newlyweds-house-94000995/"}
