Its early kitchen and meat house are rare survivals for Hanover County houses of 1820. The boxwood garden adds to the picture of early-nineteenth-century rural life.","narrative":"Springfield is a brick farmhouse built in 1820 in rural western Hanover County, Virginia. The two-story, five-bay house has a central passage plan, an English basement, two end chimneys and a gable roof. Tax records show it was completed as a residence for Lucy Grymes Nelson, widow of Thomas Nelson, a Revolutionary War general and governor of Virginia. Later owners included the Fulcher and Wilkie families, and the farm has been owner-occupied and worked throughout its history. Greek Revival woodwork replaced some original first-floor trim, probably between 1840 and 1850, and the house was renovated with additions in the 1970s. Two period outbuildings survive, a frame kitchen and a meat house, along with a circular English boxwood garden sixty-six feet across. Few Hanover County houses of 1820 keep their outbuildings. The property was listed for its architecture, as a well-preserved example of a Piedmont family farm of the early nineteenth century.","period_of_significance":"1820","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early Republic: Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Continuously occupied since 1820 and operating as a working farm; the house was renovated in the 1970s and is well maintained, though the kitchen is in very poor condition and the schoolhouse is collapsing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.115444-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/46/6811/41681146/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/94000990.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000990/882eeecdc2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000990/882eeecdc2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hanover_Springfield.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hanover_Springfield.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681146","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springfield_(Coatesville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713243"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/hanover-county/springfield-94000990/"}
