The rear and center blocks date to about 1830, and Christopher Willis added the large front block in 1869.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding vernacular interpretation of Italianate architecture with an Oriental Revival porch, and an inventive example of post-Civil War domestic design in Yates County. It also retains an early settlement-period dwelling and a high level of interior and exterior integrity. It is further tied to Christopher Willis, a prominent Dresden flour miller whose wealth came from the Crooked Lake Canal era.","narrative":"Overlooking Seneca Lake from a hill in the village of Dresden, this house at 57 Seneca Street grew in three stages. A simple Greek Revival center block and a one-story rear block date to about 1820-30. In 1869, miller Christopher Willis added a square, hipped-roof Italianate front block topped by a cupola, where he signed his name and the date May 14, 1869. A wrap-around porch with foliated ogee arches and scrolled spandrels, along with arabesque ironwork on the doors, gives the house an Islamic-inspired, Oriental Revival character. Willis ran a flour mill across the road, near the entrance of the Crooked Lake Canal, and the house reflects the prosperity the canal brought to Dresden. Inside, the front block keeps its central hall, original stair, grained woodwork, plaster walls and wallpaper. A stone hitching post and mounting block remain out front. The property was recognized for its architectural distinction and its link to Dresden's milling history.","period_of_significance":"ca.1830, ca.1869","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival; Late-19th Century/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single dwelling; the form lists both historic and current function as domestic single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.30725-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000967.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000967/6d647eefd9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000967/6d647eefd9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Shuvaev","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Christopher_Willis_House,_Dresden_NY_01.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Shuvaev</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Christopher_Willis_House,_Dresden_NY_01.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315601","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_Willis_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5113437"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/willis-christopher-house-94000967/"}
