It combines Federal-era massing, symmetrical windows and thin-muntin sash with Greek Revival broad eaves, partial cornice returns and a monumental entrance. It is also an important local landmark that recalls early nineteenth-century settlement of the area.","narrative":"Built around 1838 by Charles Wagener, this two-story wood-frame house stands on the north side of Elm Street in Penn Yan, beside Lakeview Cemetery. It has a T-shaped plan, a gable roof with a molded cornice and partial returns, clapboard siding, and a full-width single-story porch with six square posts. Inside, the historic plan survives, along with plaster on lath walls and wood moldings. The house was listed for its architecture. It blends late Federal features, including rectangular massing, symmetrical window placement and multiple-light sash with thin muntins, with Greek Revival elements such as broad eaves, partial cornice returns and a monumental entrance. Wagener was the grandson of David Wagener, an early follower of Jemima Wilkinson who bought much of the land that became Penn Yan and set aside the cemetery ground. Charles later inherited land on the village's western edge and worked as a merchant. The house remains a local landmark of early settlement and a residence today.","period_of_significance":"ca.1838","architect_builder":"Charles Wagener","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival (transitional Federal/Greek Revival)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling and retains its historic plan and interior fabric such as plaster on lath walls and wood moldings.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.544398-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/94000960.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000960/e8dd68dba0-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/94000960/e8dd68dba0-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Shuvaev","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Wagener_House,_Penn_Yan_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Shuvaev</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Charles_Wagener_House,_Penn_Yan_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315593","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Wagener_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5083293"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/yates-county/wagener-charles-house-94000960/"}
